It took the event of her husband’s heart attack to force them both to a complete reassessment.  Letting go of the other-directed activities that were now life-wasting; each became more selective of purpose and more tolerant of the other’s separateness.  He is a man who thrives on the scattershot stimulation of global contacts and involvement.  She is a woman whose sensibilities have grown more private.  Her creative energies are drained by overexposure to people; she thrives on being alone.  Gradually over the course of the Deadline Decade, they have worked out a way of being both more intimate and more individual.
